The focus on rice planting in the right screen indicates that this painting portrays spring and early summer, while the left screen, with its scenes of harvesting, represents autumn. These paintings were part of the furnishings given to Morihime, the nineteenth daughter of the Shogun Tokugawa Ienari on her marriage to Nabeshima Naomasa of Saga. The brushwork is precise and the colors are clear. This is an excellent work, fully displaying the skill of Kano Osanobu (1796-1846), who made a significant contribution as a leading painter of the Kano School during the late Edo period. Each screen bears the inscription "Painted by Seisen'in Hogen Osanobu" and a square red seal reading "Kaishinsai".
