| The glass collection in the Suntory Museum of Art can be divided into three groups: Japanese glass from the Edo period, European glass in and after the 15th century and also the works in the Art Nouveau period, especially that of Emile Galle, and Ch'ienlung glass of Ch'ing Dynasty China. In 1977, a collection of Japanese and Chinese glass owned by the sculptor Asakura Fumio was added, thereby immeasurably enriching our glass collection both quantitatively and qualitatively. Concerning European glass, about 400 pieces of modern European glass were acquired in 1974. More recently, the masterpieces of Emile Galle, a leader of the Art Nouveau movement at the end of the 19th century, were added to the collection. Furthermore, glasswork objects by contemporary artists shown in the exhibition for the Suntory Prize (held since 1988) have been added to the collection. Today, glass articles number almost 1000. |
