Numerous works of lacquer art used in daily life have been collected by the museum in line with its principal theme of "Beauty in Daily Life. " Box with fusenryo design in mother-of-pearl inlay and maki-e", a National Treasure, and three works designated Important Cultural Properties head this diverse collection covering the major periods of Japanese lacquer history from the Heian period through the Edo period. This replete content is seconded only by the high quality of these works, making lacquer arts the best known "face" of the Suntory Museum of Art.
The museum's lacquer collection is characterized by its true breadth of genre and style, with a focus on the furnishings, eating utensils and desk accessories which were created amidst Japanese daily life. This focus area is supplemented by a number of Namban lacquer works and works created in the southern islands of Okinawa.
