Suntory Hall 40th Anniversary Season
Anniversary Season Overview

In 2026, Suntory Hall (Minato-ku, Tokyo / President: Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi) will mark its 40th anniversary.

Opened on October 12, 1986, Suntory Hall was the first dedicated concert hall in Tokyo, based on the concept: “in pursuit of the world’s most beautiful sound”. The hall has presented original and high-quality programmes of concerts, educational projects with the view of developing and passing on our musical culture to the next generation, and has implemented various initiatives to engage the public. It is a highly regarded venue by artists as well as music lovers both in Japan and internationally. Since its opening, it has held over 21,000 concerts and has been visited by 23.04 million people.*

* as of the end of October, 2025

Suntory Hall will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a wide range of activities over 11 months from April 1, 2026 to February 28, 2027. Since its opening in 1986, it has nurtured music by world-class artists together with music-loving audiences. On that stage, in that blessed moment, the brilliance of life is embodied by everyone together. Therefore, the key concept for the 40th anniversary of Suntory Hall is “Moments that Shape the Future”. Based on this key concept, the 40th anniversary logo is centered on the hall logo based on the Chinese character “響 Hibiki” with the design of the “40th” indicating the future.

During its 40th season, Suntory Hall will present a variety of commemoratives concerts such as the chamber music festival “Suntory Hall Chamber Music Garden” which marks its 15th anniversary, a revival of the highly-regarded original Hall Opera® production of Tan Dun’s TEA: A Mirror of Soul, the annual "Suntory Hall Summer Festival" of contemporary music which has taken place since 1987, the “40th Anniversary Gala Concert” - the central event of the anniversary season, and Wiener Philharmoniker Week in Japan 2026 led by Maestro Riccardo Muti who celebrates his 85th birthday in 2026. Additionally, the “Tokyo Symphony Orchestra & Suntory Hall Subscription Concert for Children” series, the first of its kind in Japan, marks its landmark 100th concert in December 2026.

Furthermore, the anniversary season signals the beginning of a new phase of development, with a focus on nurturing the next generation of performers, centred around the Suntory Hall Academies (Opera and Chamber Music). Alongside the concerts that are presented/co-presented by Suntory Hall, a selection of carefully chosen the 40th anniversary “Partner Concerts” will be added to the season line-up. Various related events and initiatives will also be held. We look forward to welcoming you.

1. 40th Anniversary Key Concept and Logo

Suntory Hall was the first concert hall in Japan to be built adopting the vineyard style, with the aim of pursuing the world’s most beautiful sound. The logo of the hall, which has been used since the opening, is based on the Chinese character "響 Hibiki" meaning “beautiful sound” or “resonance” (designed by Takenobu Igarashi).

In the 40 years since the opening, Suntory Hall has nurtured music by world-class artists together with the music-loving audience. On that stage, in that blessed moment, the brilliance of life is embodied by everyone together. The moments of “beautiful resonance” delivered by Suntory Hall leads into the future. The future of Suntory Hall begins here, now. This is the idea behind the anniversary key concept: Moments that Shape the Future.
