These square trays with rounded corners and four gently curving legs are of the type called nekoashi zen, “cat-leg trays.” They are decorated with flowers of the four seasons and a variety of images, including crane in reeds, sparrow with bamboo in snow, dragonfly and bamboo shoot, plovers with waves and sailboat, and a man cutting horsetails. The images as motifs associated with all the seasons, but since the spring scenes stand out, this tray may have been made for the Hina Festival in spring. (Paragon or Puzzle?
