Red lacquer has been applied to the whole surface of the bowl, which is decorated with a pattern of interlocking circles in sunken gold. On top, the camellias and butterflies have been rendered in the mitsuda-e technique of painting with oil and pigments. The brightly colored camellias are painted in vermilion, white, green, and yellow with white shading added to the flowers in places. It is a gorgeous bowl with a pattern of vertical and horizontal lines encircling the inside and outside of the rim and a diagonal pattern of repeated diamond shapes on the foot of the bowl. Its true lineage may be as part of a set of sacred lacquer dishes, which were decorated with similar techniques and designs.
