Bacchus, the god of the harvest, wine, and ecstasy, being elevated by Satyrs, half man, half beast, occupies the center of this large goblet. A scene of drinking wine, playing music, and wandering happily through the fields is engraved in it. The engraver, Friedrich Winter, worked in Silesia (now part of Poland). Applying crystal engraving techniques to highly clear Bohemian glass, he contributed significantly to its fame. The carving and polishing developed with the constraints of a monochromatic material are remarkable.
