This goblet is for drinking ale. The wheat spike (wheat being the main ingredient in ale) and dove (the symbol of peace) motif was painted in enamels. The enamelers were William (1740-1819) and Mary (1749-97) Beilby, brother and sister, whose workshop was in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, in northeast England. They produced joint work from 1760 until about 1778. The elegant enamel colors, with white as the base tone, and the flawless lace glass stem are characteristic of their work.
