Emile Galle expressed his artistry by experimenting with various techniques. The butterflies on the surface of this flower vase are inserted by a kind of "glass marquetry". A colored glass butterfly is fused onto the surface of the vase and smoothed by heating. This technique produces a decorative effect comparable to wood-worked marquetry. In this object, pale yellow glass simulates the veins of leaves. A blue underwing moth and a hummingbird hawkmoth gathering at a bindweed flower define the form of this vase. The two types of moths were rendered using the glass marquetery technique, in which pieces of glass, pre-shaped into motifs, are fused to the surface of the work. The same type of vase was shown in ths desplay case called “Repos dans la solitude” (rest in solitude) that Gallé unveiled at the 1900 Paris Expo. (『没後120年 エミール・ガレ:憧憬のパリ』サントリー美術館、2024年)
