Emile Galle(1846-1904) was a famous leader of the Art Nouveau movement in the late 19th century. His glass objects are characterized by his close observation of nature, particularly flowers, plants, birds and insects. A tadpole design is applied to the surface of this flower vase. Furthermore, the tadpole's different stages of growth are rendered accurately and in detail. This masterpiece was exhibited in the Paris International Exposition held in 1900. This vase symbolizes the workings of nature and the flow of time in the form of a growing tadpole. The tadpoles are rendered three-dimensionally and realistivally. Around the floating weeds by the vase’s mouth is a quotation from “Le Château du Souvenir”, a poem by Théophile Gautier. (『没後120年 エミール・ガレ:憧憬のパリ』サントリー美術館、2024年)
