Silver foil is sealed in amber-colored grass, emitting a beautiful glow. This vase has a flat body with an octagonal cross section in traditional Chinese style. A white cattleya orchid is applied to the front surface of the vase. The dimensional effect of the flower adds depth and a natural feeling. On the back surface, the leaves of a flower that has finished blooming is pictured to emphasize the transience of nature. There are many glass pieces using a cattleya motif. This is one of the most outstanding of them. In his later years, Gallé used both appliqué and engraving, experimenting with a tree- dimensional, realistic, and at times grotesque style. This orchid seems to have enough force to leap off the vase; Gallé has gone beyond furctional vessels into the domain of glass sss sculpture. (『没後120年 エミール・ガレ:憧憬のパリ』サントリー美術館、2024年)
