Light brown glass has been thickly layered over transparent glass and a pelican and dragon, glaring at each other, about to go to war, carved. In Christianity, the pelican stands for self care, sacrifice, devotion, and, by extension, the symbol of a virtuous church. The dragon, in this case, is a motif that symbolizes arrogance, irreverence, and evil.(Paragon or Puzzle? Your Own Perspectives on Works in the Suntory Museum of Art Collection, 2024) The pelican and the dragon glaring at each other are contrastiongly carved in white and black, in a powerful expression of the theme of a battle between good and evil. Gallé gave a vase of the same design as this one O’Brien, a leader of the lrish independence movement, as a wedding present. (『没後120年 エミール・ガレ:憧憬のパリ』サントリー美術館、2024年)
