In core forming, one of the oldest glassmaking techniques, a core is prepared, and the glassmaker winds trails (strands) of molten glass around the core. This example is a perfume flask. Glass was originally used as a substitute for the lapis lazuli and turquoise objects used to decorate objects the settings for royalty and other elites. Thus, ancient glass is often vividly colored and lustrous, as we see here. Its feathered motif is extremely delicate. The term alabastron is derived from an ancient type of pottery vessel; albastra were mainly used to hold perfumes and balms.
