This case has a fitted cover, and the rims of both lid and box are reinforced with tin. The whole surface is coated with black lacquer, and scenes of Mt. Horai in maki-e decorating the front and back of the lid, the sides of the box, and on the shallow tray inside. The design on the exterior of the cover is composed of an upper and lower level and consists of pines growing luxuriantly on fantastic rocks, while overhead, cranes fly about. Gilt-copper fittings made to hold a cord and fashioned in an openwork design of young pines are attached to both of the long sides of the box. It is said that the representation of Mt. Horai, which features pine, bamboo, and plum on a sandy beach, as well as the crane and tortoise, was the origin of the auspicious omens motif. Although the depiction of the Isle of the Immortals has changed over time, it has continued through the ages as a very popular design.
