Important cultural property
A backgammon board fashioned from two rectangular boxes joined with hinges. The interior features the gaming board with twelve points at top and bottom finished in red lacquer and motherof- pearl. The scenery at Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Sumiyoshi-taisha Shrine, complete with visitors, is rendered in gold hiramaki-e where the gold is sprinkled on the lacquer surface in very low relief, silver maki-e in the e-nashiji style of sprinkling coarse flakes over the whole surface, and inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Characteristically for Namban (Southern Barbarian) lacquerware, any gaps are filled with plant designs. This is a valuable object since it is in relatively good condition and there are few genuine examples of Western gaming boards among Namban lacquerware.
