Paste resist and shaped resist techniques were used to create the fan, wisteria, hollyhock, and peony forms in white on the vermillion figured satin ground. The uchikake was then embroidered with purple, yellowish green, green, and gold yarns. Bird-andflower designs and other motifs have been applied to the fans. Because the fan shape opens wide from its tip, suggesting expanding prosperity, it was a favorite auspicious motif. This gorgeous garment would have been well suited to a festive event.
