This costume has paulownia arabesques in the alternating blocks of red and white. The term atsuita refers to a thick fabric or costumes made of that type of fabric. In Noh performances, actors playing male roles wear a kitsuke garment under the outer one, in a combination that can express vitality or force or bitterness, for example. Atsuita of profusely decorated brocade, or karaori, are called atsuita karaori. (Paragon or Puzzle? Your Own Perspectives on Works in the Suntory Museum of Art Collection, 2024)
