This Tsugaru kogin kimono has a geometric pattern embroidered in cotton on hemp fabric. Kogin embroidery patterns differ by region. This example has a pattern consisting of a single unit embroidered continuously over the front and back of the kimono. Known as azuma kogin, this type was made in in the Kuroishi area of Minamitsugaru county, on the east side of the Iwaki River. Hemp fabric is used for the outer, removable eri collar, and jizashi (count stitch) embroider is applied to reinforce the hemp cloth from the waist down and attach the cotton lining at the waist.
