This garment is made of a kasuri (ikat) fabric, one of the iconic textiles of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Kasuri is a textile technique in which binding the yarns and other methods are used to dye them before weaving. Ryukyu kasuri had a significant impact on the textiles of the main Japanese islands. In warp and weft kasuri, as in this example, both the warp and weft yarns are bound and dyed in advance to produce a lattice pattern in vermilion on a dark blue ground. (Paragon or Puzzle?
