The very misshapen mouth, which resembles the shape of a sword guard, reaches out in four directions. Relatively small lobes are attached on both sides of the broad neck that is marked with two horizontal lines. The body is vertically carved with a spatula and one side of the base is notably carved. Wood ash fell on the mouth in the course of firing. The neck and the upper half of the body are bisque-fired in brown, with a streak of green glaze dripping downward. The base reveals a dark brown color, with exposed felspar particles. Iga ware was produced in the district of the same name in Mie Prefecture where the ruins of old kilns in Makiyama and Marubashira remain. This ware was noted for its rustic flower vases that used natural glazes.
