Important cultural property
This covered box has a gently square shape, with rounded corners. The lid is design to rest atop the body of the box. It is thought that Kenzan may have referred to Hon'ami Kōetsu's writing box or basket-like lidded works in devising its shape. Making use of the rough surface of the clay, he drew silver grass in white slip, underglaze blue, and gold pigment, creating a design that calls to mind the waving grasses of Musashino. The interior of the lid and body have are covered in white engobe to which overall lozenge-shaped floral motifs have been applied in underglaze blue. The decorative qualities of the exterior and interior are in strong contrast.
