Sato Kunio was born in 1970 in Kanagawa prefecture. This work combines the form of a man with that of a boat, with the arms and legs fashioned from hammered copper. The torso, which opens up to allow a person to climb in, was assembled from joined pieces of wood, and, in fact, this work of art is capable of actually carrying a person across water. Stretched out and with his arms crossed, the gigantic figure seems serene and perhaps a bit comical. However, details such as the cooper rivets that are driven in at even intervals along the torso's outer wall and the panel on the interior that is made in imitation of a compass convey the fine design sensibility that informs every part of the work. This piece was the winner of The Suntory Prize '94.
