Basket pillows were woven of bamboo. Because they let air through, they were used, for example, for naps in the summertime. The basket pillow was a smaller version of the large pillow or “bamboo wife” used in southern China. It is said to have reached Japan via Nagasaki and become widely used. Because it is an implement that gives a sense of the season, basket pillow (kago makura) also became, in poetry, a seasonal word for summer. (Paragon or Puzzle?
