Kemari is a ball game in which the goal is to pass the ball (mari) by kicking it and keeping it from falling to the ground. It has been a part of aristocratic culture since at least the latter half of the Heian period. The ball is made of deer hide. Its holder is a stand of black lacquer decorated with scattered suiha (spiral) and agarifuji (rising wisteria) crests in maki-e. The ringshaped frame that holds the ball has chrysanthemum arabesques in gold and silver maki-e; the metal fittings are made of silver.(Paragon or Puzzle?
