Both the bowls and lids have a black lacquer ground on the exterior, with red lacquer applied to their interiors. A narrow band of gold leaf has been applied at the rim of each bowl and lid, and a broad, irregular band at the lower edge of the foot. Floral diamond shapes have been painted in red lacquer on three sides, with four small diamonds applied to them in gold leaf. Such bowls, with simple, countrified air, are called Hidehira bowls, after a member of the Fujiwara clan buried in what is now Iwate prefecture. (Paragon or Puzzle?
