This incense burner has an openwork cover of gilt bronze in a wickerwork design, and the rim of both the cover and the body is reinforced with gilt bronze. The censer was used essentially to scent clothing or the interior of a room. The lacquered exterior of the body is covered with ikake-ji (densely sprinkled gold powder) and a thin sprinkling of hirame-fun (coarse metalflakes) and further decorated with chrysanthemums, Chinese bellflowers, Japanese bush clover, patrinia, and pampas grass and other autumn grasses rendered in slightly raised maki-e and silver nacre. In addition, silver studding has been applied over the whole surface, creating a marvelous sense of dewdrops glistening on the leaves and stalks. In form, design, and technique, this work reflects the characteristics of lacquerware produced during the transitional period from the Kamakura to the Muromachi era.
