Important cultural property
This bowl depicts five ships: one in the bottom of the bowl and two each in panels on its interior and exterior sides. A European-style peony motif and eight Dutchmen are also drawn in the bottom of the bowl. Large and small Dutchmen are also drawn inside red jewels on the exterior. A large character read kotobuki (longevity/congratulations) has been written inside the foot. From the mid seventeenth century on, Imari ware, which developed through the Dutch trade, was fashionable for designs that interspersed Dutch, Japanese, and Chinese motifs. This bowl is an archetypical example of the finest overglaze enameled porcelains made for the domestic market in the kinrande style, overglaze enamels with gold, which originated in the Genroku era (1688-1704).
