The interior of this bowl is somewhat uneven, and the walls curve slightly outward as they approach the rim. With a diameter at the mouth of 37 centimeters, this is a large bowl and attests to the highly developed wheel technique of the Karatsu potter, even in the production of items for everyday use. The trimmed foot is cracked in two places. Six spur marks are evident on the interior. The design painted in iron glaze and concentrated away from the center appears to be a depiction of grasses; the curved lines suggesting this motif are described in three powerful brushstrokes drawn effortlessly across the surface. Drops of splashed glaze are visible next to the design, giving this piece a rustic flavor.
