These bowls were first thrown in cylindrical shapes on a wheel and then the rims shaped by hand to create squarish forms. The waist is slightly restricted, and below it the bowl swells out like a round cushion. This seems to have been a popular shape for Karatsu pieces, and one can find many examples of it. On the body are alternating designs of what appear to be dried persimmon and plant sprouts. They are rendered quickly and concisely with bold and powerful brushstrokes, and the groupings of vertical lines create rhythmical designs. Thin glaze was applied to the body up to the area of the waist; the low foot was trimmed while the clay was still damp.
