The newest addition to our collection is this letter from the Kyoto potter Mokubei (1767-1833) to a “Yamada-sama.” In it he wrote an exaggerated excuse for his delay in thanking Yamada for something he had been given: “I did not send you a letter of thanks immediately because I was experiencing the agonies of hell, working myself to death at the kiln.” That apology gives us a sense of Mokubei’s character: he did love a joke.
