On a wide eight-fold screen, the scenery of Mukojima and the opposite side the Sumida River are pictured. On this side of the river, crowds of people stroll by cherries in full bloom. On the bank beyond the quietly flowing river, the famous sightseeing spots of Edo, including the temple Matsuchiyama Shoten, are painted against a distant view of Mt.Fuji. Kuwagata Keisai ( 1764 - 1824 ) who used to be an ukiyo-e painter, and was later retained by the Tsuyama clan. He was noted for his realistic renditions of various scenes of Edo. This masterpiece, produced in his final years, is well known for the thick and thin lines which characterize his style of painting.
