The Tale of Genji has proven to be a vast treasure house of inspiration for art, beginning with handscrolls and screens, and including paintings on shikishi and fans. The subject of the present work is taken from the Sakaki chapter. The singular torii of unstripped wood on the right screen and the brushwood fence on both left and right panels indicate that the scene is Nonomiya. Genji and his attendants have come to Nonomiya in Saga prefecture to visit Rokujo-no-Miyasundokoro, who has resolved to Ise with her daughter so that daughter might become a saigu (vestal virgin) at the shrine. The depiction of this event, set amidst tall, thick grasses lit by the autumn moon, succeeds in conveying the deep emotions that underlie the scene.
