This pair of picture scrolls depicts waka poems on scenes of the twelve months of the year. The waka were composed by Kyoto aristocrats in the mid Edo period; Tosa Mitsuyoshi, an artist serving the imperial court, provided the paintings. This work was created to celebrate the seventieth birthday of Date Yoshimura, the fifth-generation lord of the Sendai domain, and enables to experiences the aesthetics of court culture at that time.
