The cherry blossoms and maple leaves on either side of this pair of folding screens contrast the differences between spring and autumn while the birds fluttering through the golden clouds and the flowing water connect the two, bringing them together into one seamless piece. The vivid colors of this work are typical of the Tosa school of painting, which primarily focuses on traditional Yamato-e paintings. This combination of cherry blossoms and maple leaves is derived from the pairing of Mount Yoshino's cherry blossoms and Tatsuta River's maple leaves in Nara Prefecture, praised in the introduction to the Kokin Wakashū (Collection of Japanese Poems of Ancient and Modern Times). This works to not only use the cherry blossoms and maple leaves as beautiful representations of spring and autumn but evoke the image of Yoshino and Tatsuta as places. Placing this work on display, you are invited into Yoshino and Tatsuta, two celebrated places from Japanese poetry.
