Bunchō worked for the Tayasu family, one of the three branches of the Tokugawa clan, and rose to become attendant to Matsudaira Sadanobu who was born into the Tayasu family and became daimyō of the Shirakawa Domain. This work has been passed down in the Tayasu family. The left and right scroll are stamped with an oblong shubun seal telling us that Bunchō painted the scroll in Bunsei 5 (1822). That was also the year Bunchō turned sixty, in the traditional way of counting age, and it is thought he painted the scrolls in return for the long patronage of the Tayasu family. The sincerity of his sentiments towards the Tayasu family is implied in the meticulous style of painting with its delicate brush strokes and careful coloring.
