The subjects of this set of five ukiyo-e prints (soroimono) are children at play on the gosekku, the five seasonal festivals: Jinjitsu on 7 January (the Seven Herbs Festival), Jōshi or Momo no Sekku on 3 March (the Girl's Day Festival), Tango no Sekku on 5 May (the Boys'Day Festival), Shichiseki on 7 July (the Star Festival) and Chōyō on 9 September (the Chrysanthemum Festival). Here the Momo no Sekku print depicts the Doll Festival, with its elaborate displays of dolls. The Tango no Sekku print's subject is Boys' Day, with banners featuring Kintarō and other motifs, plus little boys romping around. The Star Festival print shows children attaching decorative slips of paper on which wishes have been written to stalks of bamboo. In these prints on seasonal festivals, Torii Kiyonaga, an ukiyo- e artist active in the mid Edo period, depicted healthy, lively children, thus imbuing the prints with prayers for the prosperity of one's descendants and continuation of one's line.
