This portable tiered food box was intended for use when going cherry-blossom viewing. It is fitted with a door on the front that slides up, revealing two compartments inside. The upper level holds a four-tiered box, five square plates and a four-cornered sake container, for which the plates also serve as a cover. In the lower compartment are a rectangular tray and box that can be slid out like a drawer. The exterior of the outer box is decorated with a scene of a weeping cherry tree in full bloom spilling over a fence and a carriage halted nearby, which is depicted in togidashi (polished) maki-e on a black laquer ground. On the lids of the tiered box are painted Chinese bellflowers in mist, a birdcage, and sparrows, while on the exterior is depicted a silvery full moon shining through a bamboo blind. The five square plates are decorated with designs pertaining to the five festival days. Other designs, such as that of bugaku (Court music and dance) and that of phoenix and paulownia, as well as the sake container decorated with a bamboo blind motif make this gorgeous work quite suitable as an accompaniment to cherry-blossom viewing.
