This hexagonal hot water pot has a folding lid, handle, spout, and three tubular feet. Alternating sections of red and black lacquer decorate the body. In the center of the red lacquer ground is a flower medallion containing a peony design; this design is surrounded by a shippo-tsunagi pattern of interlocking circles, all fashioned in chingin (sunken silver). On the black lacquer ground are lightning, fish-scale, and interlocking diamond patterns inlaid in mother-of-pearl. Similar designs can be seen on the folding lid, where red and black sections create a checker board design. The lid is fitted with a gold-plated silver knob. The spout is embellished with karahana (Chinese flowers), and the handle with a flower arabesque design on the top and a sawtooth pattern along the edge, all inlaid in mother-of-pearl.
