Three-tiered saké cups were often used on auspicious occasions, notably the triple exchange of nuptial cups at weddings. The plump form of the stand beneath the cups is charming as well. The cut-glass motifs are simple, overall diamond cuts, the edges left as chevrons, in a precisely accurate lattice pattern. This set typifies the Edo taste for the clean and refined. In Europe, which provided the model, it was called the plain diamond cut.
