So light, so exquisitely detailed, the Venetian glass we admire today is the finest flowering of an art form that began with cristallo, a colorless glass developed around 1450 a.d. As the glory that was the Venetian economy peaked, so did this glass. Enamels, lattimo (milk-white), lace glass, and ice glass: eye-catching forms and colors proliferated. To European aristocrats, the excellent Venetian glass became an enviable form of adornment.
To keep the manufacturing process secret and prevent the spread of fires, glass production was at first restricted to the island of Murano. In response to demand in the surrounding countries, however, the secrets gradually spread. Glass a la facon de Venise, “in the Venetian style”, created through a combination of straight imitation and introduction of local qualities, swept across Europe in the 16th to 18th centuries. Word of it spread beyond Europe as well. Spanish and Portuguese vessels brought the glass to Japan, where its beauty is believed to have been a major impetus to the development of glass in Japan.
The visual appeal of Venetian glass continues to captivate those who see it. For this exhibition we have assembled 140 works, whose origins range from Renaissance Europe, to European and Japanese glass and contemporary glass art influenced by Venetian glass. We hope you enjoy the beauty of all this Venetian glass, an art form whose appeal has transcended time and place.
