Kyōsai's World: The Israel Goldman Collection

Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831–89) was a painter who lived through a period of transition spanning the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate and the Meiji era. As modernisation transformed the social and economic structures around artists, Kyōsai responded keenly to the changes of his time, pursuing new forms of expression unbound by conventional frameworks. His artistic world was remarkably diverse, ranging from humorous caricatures to elaborate Buddhist paintings, and featured a variety of motifs, including animals, humans, super natural beings, and deities. Through his exceptional technical skill, vigorous depictions of animals, witty and critically incisive caricatures, and abundant imagination and humour, Kyōsai vividly portrayed the inherent nature of human beings.
The Israel Goldman Collection is a world-leading collection of works by Kawanabe Kyōsai amassed over more than 40 years by Mr. Israel Goldman, an art dealer specialising in ukiyo-e and Edo-period paintings. This exhibition explores the quintessence of Kyōsai's artistry through approximately 110 works, including more than 60 that are on show in Japan for the first time.
