The Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, France’s national porcelain manufactory, was founded in 1740, during the reign of Louis XV. It has been one of Europe’s premier sources of porcelain ever since.
Sèvres porcelain requires considerable time and effort and cannot be mass-produced. This exhibition traces these rare and precious wares’ four centuries of history, focusing on four golden ages.
Sèvres has always carefully examined the nature of the society in which people desiring the finest porcelains lived. It has carefully considered what porcelains would suit their luxurious living spaces and elegant social settings. As a result, Sèvres transformed porcelain from a symbol of fascination with the Far East to a ceramic art that satisfied the intellectual interests and stimulated the elites. To achieve that goal, Sèvres brought together the creative abilities of outstanding artists and the skills and knowledge of technicians and scientists.
Today, Sèvres continues to cooperate with famous artists throughout the world as it takes up new challenges and scales new heights. Please enjoy this exhibition of three hundred creative years from Sèvres.
