The Itsuo Art Museum, operated by the Hankyu Culture Foundation, was established in 1957 in Ikeda city, Osaka. “Itsuo” is the art name used by Kobayashi Ichizo (1873–1957), a leading modern Japanese entrepreneur best known as the founder of the Hankyu Toho Group (now the Hankyu Hanshin Toho Group). His collection, comprising approximately 5,500 objects and guided by a commitment to sharing beauty with the public, reflects both his wide-ranging achievements and his forward-looking, enterprising character. The collection is remarkably diverse, encompassing items from fragments of classical calligraphy (kohitsugire) and tea utensils to paintings by Yosa Buson and Go Shun. This exhibition, Masterpieces from the Itsuo Art Museum Collection: Buson, Go Shun, and the Art of Tea, marks the first large-scale presentation of the collection in Tokyo in approximately 30 years, and is a highly anticipated event for classical Japanese art enthusiasts.
