Suntory Hall has been hosting Wiener Philharmoniker Week in Japan since 1999, giving Japanese audiences a regular opportunity to enjoy this renowned orchestra, and this year is its twentieth edition. Highly esteemed conductor Tugan Sokhiev will lead the tour, stepping in for Franz Welser-Möst who had to withdraw due to ongoing cancer treatment, and the soloist is the celebrated pianist Lang Lang.

During Wiener Philharmoniker Week, a diverse line up of programmes is held by Suntory Hall and Wiener Philharmoniker (Vienna Philharmonic). As well as an open rehearsal, School programme geared towards junior high and high school students. With the strong wish to pass on the tradition of music to young people, the Wiener Philharmoniker is actively working to nurture young musicians. Students are recruited from the general public to participate in master classes with on-site Japanese speaking interpreter.

The ever-popular Subscription Concert for Children. The 2023 season brings with it “The Colours of Music”, a series of four events on Sundays in April, July, September, and December. Each event is themed after a different colour, allowing children to enjoy colour through music. These concerts are well received by both children and adults alike.

Chamber Music Garden (CMG)

A regular feature of Suntory Hall’s summer landscape, the annual Chamber Music Garden festival (CMG) takes place over 16 days in June in the small hall “Blue Rose”. Founded in 2011 in order that people can experience chamber music up close in an intimate setting, CMG has now developed into Japan’s largest chamber music festival. This year, a total of 21 concerts will take place. In addition to the live experience, five selected concerts will be streamed (live and on-demand) on the Digital Suntory Hall platform.

Elias String Quartet
The Beethoven Cycle

The celebrated UK quartet will perform the complete cycle of Beethoven’s string quartets over six days in the intimate space of the hall’s Blue Rose (Small Hall). The performance of Beethoven’s string quartet cycle is now an established feature of the Chamber Music Garden festival, and it is considered a unique event even internationally. Every year, a different quartet is invited to take on the cycle, and this year it is the turn of the Elias String Quartet. They are the first group from the UK to undertake this monumental journey.

Opera Academy was inaugurated in 1993. In 2011, the Academy invited tenor Giuseppe Sabbatini, who currently works as a conductor and vocal instructor, to join as the Executive Faculty.
In July 2023, Young singers and pianists showcase classic Italian songs as well as opera arias as the fruits of their yearlong study.
In March 2024, Suntory Hall Opera Academy celebrates its 30th Anniversary with two Opera Gala Concerts on stage at Blue Rose (Small Hall). The stellar lineup features current academy fellows, outstanding alumni, and eminent faculty members including Giuseppe Sabbatini, Music Director of the concerts, who will come together to perform arias and highlight scenes from well-loved Italian operas.

Olga Neuwirth is a composer who rose to international acclaim in winter 2019 after her production of "Orlando" at the Vienna State Opera. Commissioned and performed at the Vienna State Opera, it was the first production of an opera by a woman in the history of the opera house. The orchestral piece she has been commissioned for this performance is a suite based off of "Orlando." The conductor is her good friend and supporter who also conducted the opera’s premiere performance, Matthias Pintscher (Theme Composer for 2021)

The Competition of Yasushi Akutagawa Suntory Award for Music Composition, named after the efforts of the late Yasushi Akutagawa (1925-89), who dedicated to develop the musical scene here in Japan, is an unmissable opportunity to hear fresh and exciting orchestral works by up-and-coming composers.The winning composer is commissioned to compose a new orchestral work, which is to be premiered in this programme concert after 2 years.

August 2023 marks composer Joji Yuasa’s 94th birthday. This is an opportunity to reflect on this legendary composer’s career at the forefront of Japanese composition across the multiple centuries. Enjoy a glimpse of Joji Yuasa today in this programme which includes the first full performance of the previously incomplete commissioned work from 2017, Locus for Orchestra while considering Yuasa's own locus within Japan’s composition history.

Based on the concept of “Encounters with and through music,” the neighbouring areas of Suntory Hall centred on ARK Hills will be brimming with music during ARK Hills Music Week. The opening, Suntory Hall ARK Classics, will be led by artistic leaders Nobuyuki Tsujii and Fumiaki Miura. Around 11 incredibly diverse concerts will be performed at the Main Hall and Blue Rose (Small Hall) for a period of five days.

Suntory Hall series Concerto “Ishin Denshin”

Michie Koyama, one of Japan’s most famous pianists, will invite listeners into Beethoven’s luscious soundworld in the second concert of her annual concerto series held over four years.
