Our founding values guide us in coexisting with society and nature
More than 125 years have passed since my great grandfather, Shinjiro Torii, founded Suntory in Osaka, Japan. Throughout the years, Suntory Group has made it our mission to contribute to the creation of a rich lifestyle culture by delivering the highest quality products and services to consumers, while at the same time achieving coexistence with diverse societies and the natural environment.
Suntory Group’s business depends on the gifts of nature including water and agricultural crops. In the aim of protecting the natural ecosystems that generate those gifts, we launched our Bird Conservation Activities in 1973. More than half a century later, we continue these efforts under the enduring belief that “Today Birds, Tomorrow Humans: The happiness that comes to birds today may bring happiness to humans tomorrow.” Long before the concept of sustainability was widely known, the ideal of coexisting with nature was already firmly rooted in Suntory Group’s DNA.
Moving forward, guided by our purpose “To inspire the brilliance of life, by creating rich experiences for people, in harmony with nature,” we will continue to pursue the realization of “the brilliance of life” for all people around the world.
Shaping the future through water sustainability
Passing on a rich and sustainable global environment to future generations is one of our most important responsibilities, and essential to the future of all Suntory Group business activities. In particular, water is an urgent issue, with approximately 5 billion people worldwide predicted to face severe water shortages by 2050. This reality reinforces the scale of the challenge we face and deepens my sense of commitment.
To address this challenge and ensure water sustainability, we at Suntory Group have long embraced our “Suntory Group Sustainable Water Philosophy” across the Group and worked to protect water resources, recognizing water as a precious resource shared with local communities. For example, more than 20 years ago, we launched the Suntory Natural Water Sanctuary Initiative in Japan to restore biodiversity and enhance forests’ natural capacity to replenish groundwater. To date, 8 of our Suntory Natural Water Sanctuaries have been certified as Nationally Certified Sustainably Managed Natural Sites promoted by the Ministry of the Environment, contributing to the conservation of biodiversity.
Our commitment to water has expanded globally, and we now conduct water resource conservation activities in the watersheds surrounding our plants in 8 countries*1. These integrated watershed management efforts have gained recognition, with all 4 of our Suntory Tennensui water plants in Japan*2 having achieved the highest level of Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) certification—Platinum—by 2025. Suntory Group is now the only company in Japan to hold this highest level of AWS certification.
In addition, “Mizuiku”—our unique education program designed to teach the next generation the importance of water—has been running for more than 20 years. It has expanded to 8 countries beyond Japan, reaching 1.79 million participants. Our efforts to protect water also support biodiversity across forests and watersheds. Addressing water, climate, and nature as interconnected challenges, we aim to contribute to the realization of a nature-positive society.
Placing sustainability at the core of management to pass on a sustainable society to future generations
In our Group Sustainability Vision, we have identified “Water and Nature,” as well as “Climate Action,” “Health,” “Human Capital,” and “Human Rights” as key material issues. Aiming to realize a society in harmony with people and nature, we will work together with stakeholders across our value chain to advance our initiatives.
As part of our Climate Action efforts, we have launched a pilot at one of our plants using one of the largest green hydrogen production systems in Japan, as part of a collaborative initiative involving Yamanashi Prefecture and 10 companies including Suntory. We hope to develop this technology into something that will facilitate not only our own decarbonization efforts but eventually contribute to the surrounding community as well.
Working toward the realization of our “Environmental Targets toward 2030” and our “Environmental Vision toward 2050,” we will continue to place sustainability at the core of our management, listening carefully to the voices of our customers and other stakeholders, and delivering the highest quality products and services that meet the evolving needs of society. As we continue to grow as a global multifaceted beverages company, we will further pursue innovation and embrace new challenges, remaining committed to passing on to future generations a sustainable society that “inspires the brilliance of life.”
